Four raiders die in attack on Pakistan police

Four gunmen who attacked a police academy in eastern Pakistan today were killed and a fifth captured after a fierce gun battle.

But reports said around 11 more attackers remained holed up at the top floor of a building in the compound on Lahore’s outskirts, and that they were holding 35 police hostage.

The army and other security forces have laid siege to the compound, and army snipers shot dead three of the attackers.

The well-organised attack has underscored the threat militancy poses to Pakistan.

Police said they later retook control of the academy, killing eight of the gunmen and capturing six.

Reports on the death tolls from the assault have varied wildly, with some officials confirming at least 11.
