India pledges security shake-up after Mumbai attacks

India’s top law minister announced a massive overhaul of the country’s security and intelligence agencies today, in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.

Home minister Palaniappan Chidambaram made the announcement in a speech to India’s parliament.

He said the government would beef up coastal security forces, create a national investigative agency, better train local police and strengthen anti-terror laws.

The measures are the government’s first detailed response to the public outcry over security and intelligence failures in the attacks, which left 171 dead in India’s financial capital.

Mr Chidambaram has previously admitted to government “lapses” over the attacks.
