Piece of Diana wedding cake fetches £1,200
A piece of a wedding cake made for the Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales has been sold at auction.
The 27-year-old slice of marzipan and icing, which is decorated with the royal coat of arms, was bought for £1,200 (€1,500), including buyer’s premium, by an anonymous bidder.
An official five-tier wedding cake was made for Charles and Diana’s wedding in 1981 but the item sold came from one of 22 other cakes distributed amongst royal staff.
The slice was given to Moyra Smith, a member of the Queen Mother’s household at Clarence House, who preserved the topping with cling film.
Included in the same lot were two other items of royal memorabilia – a letter from Charles and Diana thanking Mrs Smith for contributing to a clock given as a wedding present, and a small unopened bottle of royal heritage beer produced to mark the birth of Prince William in 1982.
The icing was sold by Dominic Winter Book Auctions based in Gloucestershire, England after Mrs Smith’s husband Don brought in the items.
Auctioneer Dominic Winter said: “It’s a large size and has survived in good condition – so its unique.
“Don’s wife, who’s now deceased, kept the icing as a souvenir. He had no particular feeling for it and will donate the money to several charities.”
