Nurses blamed for baby girl mix-up
Two nurses were today blamed for the mistake by which two baby girls were swapped at birth and ended up in the wrong families.
Hospital officials in the Czech town of Trebic said an investigation found the mix-up was a result of “serious mistakes” by the pair.
They will be fired and five other staff who contributed to the mistake will be punished.
The mix-up came to light earlier this year when the father of one of the girls, Libor Broza, became suspicious because his daughter, Nikola – now 10 months old - did not resemble him. He had his DNA tested and learned he could not have fathered her.
His wife Jaroslava Trojanova had a maternity test and her results were also negative.
They contacted the other couple Jan Cermak and his wife Jaroslava Cermakova and both have agreed to swap their daughters before the end of the year.
The hospital said it will give the results of its investigation to the police, who have carried out a separate inquiry.
