Airports up and down Britain have tightened their security arrangements following the suspected car bomb attack in Glasgow.

Police tonight closed Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport until further notice.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police announced the decision at 9.10pm with a short statement.

She said: “Following events in Glasgow today a decision has been taken to close Liverpool John Lennon Airport until further notice.

“This decision will be under constant review.”

No further information has yet been given.

Sussex Police said that it was stepping-up patrols at Gatwick Airport, which is one of Britain's busiest airports.

Police closed set-down roads in front of the terminal building at Birmingham International Airport until further notice.

The Metropolitan Police carried out an immediate review of policing plans in London to ensure they were in line with the threat level.

A statement read: "Security at Heathrow Airport has been thoroughly reviewed, in conjunction with key partners, and we have introduced enhanced levels of policing and security.

"This includes increased patrols by armed officers and the closure of access to the forecourts.

"This is for the reassurance and security of the public, and the measures that have been introduced are within our well established contingency plans.

"We are in liaison with colleagues in surrounding forces to the airport."

The same approach is being taken at London City Airport.

An enhanced number of officers for high visibility policing has been deployed in London, continuing for the "foreseeable future", the Met said.
