'No evidence' guards bragged about beating detainees

An Army officer’s investigation into allegations that guards bragged about beating Guantanamo Bay detainees has found no evidence of mistreatment, military officials said today.

Colonel Richard Basset, whose findings were approved by the Navy admiral in charge of US Southern Command, did not recommend disciplinary action against the sailors named in a statement by Marine Sgt. Heather Cerveny.

“The evidence did not support any of the allegations of mistreatment or harassment,” according to a statement released by Miami-based Southern Command, which oversees the US naval base in south eastern Cuba.
