Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted as prime minister in a military coup, arrived in London today, a newspaper said.

Thaksin was in New York to deliver a speech before the UN General Assembly when the military overthrew him.

He cancelled his speech and left New York on a chartered Russian aircraft for Britain, where he owns an apartment, according to the website of the English-language The Nation.

Accompanying him were Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai and other officials, government spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee was quoted as saying. Surapong was also with Thaksin.

The ousted leader was expected to be reunited with family members who fled Thailand.
