A mass grave containing nearly 40 sets of remains believed to be of communist soldiers killed during the Vietnam War has been uncovered in central Vietnam, it was reported today.

Construction workers found the first five sets of remains this week while digging a drainage system for a sports complex in Central Highland province of Gia Lai, some 300 miles north of Ho Chi Minh City, the Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper said.

An army excavation team later uncovered 32 more sets of remains from the grave, it said, adding that many of the skulls were injected with nails. Authorities suspected the communist commandos may have been arrested during the Tet Offensive in 1968.

The excavation would continue to look for other sets of remains, it said.

Officials were not available for comment today.
