Indian village praised for ferry rescue

Residents of a small Indian village in Canada braved the stormy waters off British Columbia’s north coast in fishing vessels and speedboats to help rescue 101 passengers and crew from a large ferry that hit a rock and sank.

The south-bound Queen of the North struck a rock without warning at 12.26am local time off Gil Island in Wright Sound, about 20 miles south of the villagers’ Hartley Bay community. The area is about 80 miles south of Prince Rupert and about 580 miles north-west of Seattle.
