Ex-Romanian PM denies corruption allegations
Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase today denied any wrongdoing and claimed that widespread reports that he and his family profited from improper real estate deals were politically motivated.
Nastase also called on the country’s top prosecutor, Ilie Botos, to check the legalities of property and real estate he inherited from elderly relatives.
Responding to widespread allegations that have appeared this week, Nastase insisted he had done nothing illegal and said he would not step down as head of the Chamber of Deputies.
He claimed a political campaign was being waged against him, arguing that many of the allegedly improper deals had occurred when he was in opposition from 1996 to 2000.
He declined to take reporters’ questions.
Social Democracy Party chairman Mircea Geoana called on Nastase, currently party leader, to address allegations that he and his relatives made millions of pounds by buying undervalued property.
