The UK's Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy today admitted he has been "seeking to cope with a drink problem" and called a leadership contest in his party.

In a statement, Mr Kennedy said that he had not acknowledged his problem publicly because "I wanted to overcome it privately".
