Wife of serial killer to be extradited to France

Belgium is expected to extradite the wife of confessed serial killer Michel Fourniret to France today, where she is wanted for her role in the suspected killings of 19 people who police believe were murdered by her husband.

Monique Olivier’s lawyer, Sarah Pollet, told Belgian daily newspaper Le Soir that her client “did not oppose her transfer to France”, to stand trial alongside Fourniret for the killings.

Olivier was to be transported to the Belgian-French border and then taken into custody by French police and taken to the northern French town of Laon, where she was to be arraigned later today.

Last week, Belgian officials sent four more legal files over to French counterparts in preparation for the long-awaited trial of Fourniret, and his extradition to France, which is expected in a few weeks.

Fourniret is suspected of killing 19 people, mostly young women, in France and Belgium between the late 1980s and 1990s.

He has admitted to some of the killings, and has been formally charged with eight.
