A strong earthquake rocked northern Japan today, the country’s meteorological agency said. No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake with preliminary magnitude 6.4 struck at 10.17pm (1.17pm Irish time) and was centred off the coast of Miyagi prefecture (state) in northern Japan, the agency said.
