Nigeria expels corruption scandal governor

President Olusegun Obasanjo’s ruling party has expelled the Nigeria governor charged in Britain with money laundering.

Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha had skipped bail in the UK and returned to Nigeria where he is immune from prosecution.

A People’s Democratic Party statement called Alamieyeseigha “an assault on the integrity” of the party.

Alamieyeseigha was charged in Britain on September 15 with laundering £1.8m (€2.65m) of stolen government funds.

But he reappeared in his office on November 21, crediting divine intervention for his return.

Nuhu Ribadu, head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, says he left Britain on a fake woman’s passport, with the governor donning a wig and dress to elude police and immigration officials.
