Iraqi president says constitution deadline will be met

Iraq’s president addressed hundreds of Shiite clerics today, calling for national unity and saying a draft of the country’s new constitution would be completed by next month’s deadline.

Talabani made his comments shortly after meeting leading Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in the holy city of Najaf, some 100 miles south of Baghdad.
