Vatican denies electioneering with doctrine handbook

A Vatican handbook made public today laid out Roman Church teaching questioning preventive war and denouncing the “horrendous crime” of abortion, but officials denied they wanted to influence the US presidential election campaign.

They also side-stepped questions on whether the war in Iraq was illegal and if Catholics can vote for politicians who back laws permitting abortion.
