Bomb blast injures police on Iraq's 'most dangerous road'
Two policemen were injured when a car bomb exploded today along the main highway leading to Baghdad’s international airport, according to the Iraqi Interior Ministry and hospital officials.
The US State Department has described the airport road as among Iraq’s most dangerous.
The car bomb exploded at 7.45am (4.45am Irish time) near a US military convoy and US officials sealed off the area, according to spokesman Colonel Adnan Abdul-Rahman. Two mortar rounds had landed near the same area about 20 minutes earlier, he said.
However, the US military said there was no American convoy in the area and no US casualties involved. But the driver of the vehicle carrying the explosives was killed, according to Major Phil Smith with the 1st Cavalry Division.
Al-Yarmouk Hospital officials said two policemen were injured in the incident along the stretch of road that is the site of frequent attacks against US troops and their supply convoys.
