Kerry unstoppable, so far

Vietnam war veteran John Kerry was today starting to look like the unstoppable candidate to win the Democratic ticket to run for presidency, after a series of fresh victories.

The Massachusetts Senator won in five of the seven states which voted for their preferred Democratic candidate on Tuesday.

“Now we will carry this campaign and the cause of a stronger, fairer, more prosperous America to every part of America,” Kerry said following the victories.

His most threatening rival now seemed to be John Edwards, the North Carolina Senator who was victorious in the South Carolina Primary.

It was the first win for Edwards, compared with Kerry’s seven state victories including New Hampshire.

But if Edwards can catch the imagination of the southern states he could prove a dangerous threat to Kerry.

Meanwhile, retired four star general Wesley Clark chalked up his first win, claiming victory in Oklahoma, although second place Edwards was so close behind a full count is needed to determine the definitive result.

It is not certain, however, whether Clark, former Supreme Allied Commander of Nato, will be able to win in any more of the states due to vote.

Victory in a state secures a candidate a certain number of delegates at the summer’s Democratic National Convention.

The candidate with most delegates is nominated as official party challenger to the President.

Former front runner Howard Dean has still not won in a single state.

While he said he did not expect to win in any of the latest seven states to vote, his bid took another heavy blow on Tuesday.

Unless the former Vermont Governor can win one of the 11 states which vote before March 2 he could be finished.

On March 2 – Super Tuesday – 11 states will vote, including California and New York.

Kerry’s latest victories were in the Arizona, Delaware and Missouri Primaries and New Mexico and North Dakota Caucuses.
