Shootout death baby funeral taking place today
The funeral of a toddler killed in a shooting while on holiday in Turkey was taking place today.
Two-year-old Alistair Grimason from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, UK, was killed by a stray bullet when a gunfight erupted at a Turkish cafe where his mother and grandmother were eating a meal on July 7.
He was said to have been asleep in his pram at the time.
His father David, 31, from East Kilbride, immediately flew out to Turkey to be with his wife Ozlem, 27, who had been visiting relatives near Izmir when the tragedy struck.
One man was killed in the shoot-out while two others were taken to hospital for treatment.
Last Friday Alistair’s parents touched down at Glasgow Airport after a marathon 15-hour journey to bring their son’s body back home.
They described the toddler as a “fun-loving and clever boy”.
The funeral was being held at Old Parish Church, Montgomery Street, East Kilbride.
Speaking ahead of today’s funeral, Huseyin Gungor, the Turkish Vice Consul in London, said: “I have spoken recently with the Grimason family and said if there is anything that we can do we will.
“There are no words to describe what has happened. It is a tragedy and the perpetrators will be brought to justice.”
The man suspected of the killing, Daimi Aslan, a 32-year-old Turkish car dealer, is still at large, said officials at the Turkish Embassy in London yesterday.
A man who had been arrested in connection with the killing was questioned but later released by Turkish police.
