Eight people hurt in fifth Pamplona bull run
Eight Spaniards suffered bumps and bruises today on the fifth day of the running of the bulls in Pamplona.
There were no gorings in an otherwise clean sprint with the 1,100lb bulls through the streets of the northern Spanish town.
Shortly after the bulls left the corral at the start of the run, one veered onto a pavement and trampled two runners, but they were not seriously hurt.
Later, about halfway through the route, one youth failed to look behind him as he ran – a cardinal sin at the San Fermin festival – and was caught between two bulls, then thrown to the ground and trampled.
The Navarra regional government said eight Spaniards were admitted to hospital with injuries ranging from a twisted ankle to a scraped chin.
More than one million people are expected to have visited Pamplona during the eight day festival. The event started on Sunday, and the last of eight runs is scheduled for Monday.
The centuries-old festival, which also features a non-stop street party, was made internationally famous by Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises.
