The far right British National Party tonight gained its fifth council seat by overturning a Labour majority.

Adrian Marsden, 42, a father of seven, took the Mixenden ward at Calderdale council, West Yorkshire.

The by-election was called following the dismissal of former Labour group leader Andy Metcalfe, who failed to attend the requisite number of council meetings due to ill health.
