Rare snow draws hundreds to North Vietnam

A rare snowfall has drawn curious crowds to Vietnam’s mountainous north.

As much as six inches has fallen in Ha Giang province, Le Thanh Hai of the National Hydrometeorology Centre said today.

“Most of them have never seen snow in their lives,” Nguyen Van Phuc, vice chairman of the People’s Committee of Sapa resort, said.

More than an inch of snow fell there for more than an hour yesterday.

Hai said the cold spell, which began on Christmas Day, is the second longest to be recorded in north Vietnam in almost two decades.

The cold snap is expected to last several more days, but no more snow is forecast, he said.
