Detectives investigating the Washington sniper attacks have found further clues. They say that the car, in which two male suspects and the weapon were found, has an opening in the boot that would permit someone to lie inside and fire the rifle while remaining hidden.

Forensic psychiatrist, Dr Michael Welner, has said that's highly unusual where killing sprees are concerned.

"In my experience, spree killings are something more of a spontaneous event with someone who has been thinking, fantasising and then something happens and with some planning but perhaps a lot more spontaneity, a killing erupts. This car was outfitted," he said.

Earlier, the gun found in the back of the car of the two suspects provided a ballistics match to the sniper's weapon. John Allen Muhammed and 17-year-old John Lee Malvo were picked up in the car at a rest area yesterday.
