Lights dim on anniversary tribute by Sydney motorists
Thousands of Sydney motorists were left stranded with flat car batteries after turning on their headlights in a September 11 tribute and forgetting to turn them off again.
The political leader of New South Wales state asked motorists to switch on their car headlights as a mark of respect.
Thousands of people responded to Premier Bob Carr's call on a bright and sunny Spring morning in Sydney, but it seems many forgot to switch off their lights.
The National Roads and Motorists' Association, which provides mechanical help to drivers, said flat battery reports were running at about 530 an hour during the afternoon - 150 an hour more than usual.
The spokesman said the distress calls shot up after 5pm as people finished work.
