Six cleared of East Timor atrocities

Six former security officials were today cleared of committing grave human rights offences in East Timor during the territory's bloody break with Indonesia in 1999.

The acquittals of the majors and colonels appeared to mark the collapse of efforts to bring to justice the perpetrators of the violence.
