Zimbabwe’s political opposition has accused President Robert Mugabe of continuing a campaign of intimidation with just 24 hours remaining before polls open in the presidential election.

The Movement for Democratic Change said 12 of its election monitors were arrested in Chinoyi today and told they will not be released until after the polls close.

The MDC also said 31 party members were abducted by a youth militia in Mashonaland Central this morning and more than 200 MDC supporters had their ID cards stolen, leaving them ineligible to vote.

Five MDC members observing postal vote counts were also beaten up and supporters of Mr Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party were allegedly still registering to vote today, five days after the registration deadline.
