Military guards have found rocks and stones in the cells of terrorist suspects from the war in Afghanistan being held at Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba, according to the camp commander.

However it is unclear if the detainees were planning an attack or just playing a game said spokesman, Brigadier General Mike Lehnert.

He added that they have noticed a command structure emerging among the 158 prisoners from the al-Qaida terrorist network and the Taliban regime.

Military officials are working on making conditions more comfortable for the detainees by holding them in open-air cells with walls of chain link fencing.

They are also getting pitta bread with their meals now and officials are working with the Red Cross on the detainees’ requests for tea and novels to read.

The changes come as US Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld is set to fly to Guantanamo Bay later today to inspect the US naval base where the captured prisoners are being held.

The visit comes amid concern form the international community that the prisoners are not being treated under the terms of the UN Geneva Convention.

Washington has dismissed the claims, but it is reported that US Secretary of State, Colin Powell has advised President Bush to offer the detainees prisoner of war status to relieve international pressure.
