Colombian peace process collapses
Colombian President Andres Pastrana has ended the country's peace process saying an 11th-hour proposal from rebels "is not sufficient."
Mr Pastrana said the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) now had 48 hours to vacate the vast rebel safe haven he granted them three years ago as a condition for the peace talks.
Military forces are now building up on the borders of the area. "The proposal only refers to already agreed upon issues," Mr Pastrana said of the Farc offer.
The president had given UN envoy James LeMoyne until Saturday night to restart peace talks. The Farc had walked away from peace talks in October after the military controls were initiated.
A few minutes after the deadline expired, Farc leaders released the proposal, in which they appeared to drop demands that the military immediately end overflights of the zone and controls on its borders.
