Two killed in Rome bus plunge

A bus today plunged some 50 feet from an overpass on the main road from Rome’s airport, killing at least two people and injuring several more.

A 35-year-old Italian man died while being taken to a hospital and an Asian man was reported dead at the scene, reports said.

Earlier, Eva Berto, a doctor in the emergency room of Sant’Eugenio hospital, said many injured people were being taken to Rome area hospitals and that ambulance staff had spoken of fatalities.

Bus company staff said the bus was travelling from the town of Fiumicino, near Leonardo da Vinci airport.

Reports said it broke through a guardrail and tumbled off the elevated road, landing on its side in a field near a hotel.

The accident was near the EUR and Magliana districts and close to entrances and exits of the main road linking the Italian capital to the airport.

Authorities closed off a nearby road to regular traffic to let emergency vehicles reach the scene.
