Newspaper fined over contempt of court

The publisher of the Manchester Evening News has been fined for contempt of court over an article about the killers of Jamie Bulger.

The newspaper has been found guilty over the story and fined £30,000 with costs of £120,000.

It was found to have breached an injunction, protecting details of the whereabouts of Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.

The article was published last July, on the day the two were released.

The judgement has been passed by Britain's President of the Family Division at the High Court, Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss. She heard the case against Greater Manchester Newspapers Ltd, publishers of the newspaper, in private last month.
