Thousands flee as Indonesian religious clashes break out
Soldiers patrolled towns and villages on Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island today, as thousands of people fled their homes after a week of fighting between Muslims and Christians.
Asmara Nababan, a member of the government’s National Human Rights Commission said investigators were sent to the region today to find out why the police and military were unable to stop the conflict.
Fighting between Muslim and Christian villagers in Sulawesi, about 1,000 miles northeast of the capital, Jakarta, has killed more than 100 people in the last two years.
