Independence leader murdered in Indonesia

An independence leader in Indonesia has been kidnapped and murdered.

Villagers found the body of Theys Eluay in his car which had plunged into a ravine near the border with Papua New Guinea. News of the death has triggered street protests near his home.

Residents say demonstrators have set fire to tyres and police have responded with warning shots. There have been no reports of injuries.

Mr Eluay was the leader of the movement in the Irian Jaya province. His kidnap happened hours after he dined with local military officers. The dead man's widow, Yaneke, has accused Indonesia's security forces of being behind the murder.
