The battle against Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban and the al-Qaida terrorist network has turned into a ‘‘hide and seek’’ war, with US forces hunting down ground troops.

Rear Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt battle group, said war planes are depending more and more on special forces units on the ground in Afghanistan to identify targets.
