Rising flood waters triggered by heavy seasonal rains have killed 17 people in central and southern Vietnam.

The floods, which began last month, killed six people last week in the southern Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap.

In neighbouring An Giang province, two children were drowned by the floods.

In the Central Highland province of Daklak, seven people were killed by floods, including six people who drowned when their boats capsized.

Two people were killed by flood waters in the south-central province of Binh Thuan.

The floods have submerged 8,400 homes in Dong Thap and authorities have evacuated 1,147 families and need to evacuate 2,366 more.

In Daklak province, the floods submerged 2,200 homes.

The local Government has set up tents along some roads for the evacuees.
