Schoolgirl fights for life after bus stop accident
Three schoolgirls who were knocked down by a car as they waited for a bus remain in hospital.
Fiona McGill, the most seriously injured of the three, is fighting for her life in Monklands District General Hospital, Lanarkshire.
The 15-year-old was waiting for a bus in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, with two 13-year-old girls when a Vauxhall Nova mounted the pavement and ploughed into the queue.
Stephanie O'Brien is said to be in a serious condition in Wishaw General Hospital with injuries to her legs, while Julie-Anne Glancey is stable in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
The driver of the car was an 18-year-old postman who police said lost control at the bus stop while the girls were waiting to be taken to Cardinal Newman High School in Bellshill, Lanarkshire.
The accident was witnessed by about six other pupils who were offered counselling when they arrived at school.
Other pupils at the bus stop at the time, who were not involved in the accident, are also being offered counselling.
Head teacher Dr John O'Keane said the school is keeping in close contact with the hospital authorities.
He said the school closed early to allow staff and pupils to receive counselling.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said investigations are continuing into what caused the accident.
A spokesman for the Royal Mail said it is liaising with the police and will interview the driver, who was in a private car at the time, as part of an internal inquiry.
