Hamilton woman 'confident case will go to court'

The woman at the centre of the Hamilton sex allegations said today she was confident the case would go to trial.

A solicitor for the 28-year-old woman read out a statement at a press conference in her home town of Grimsby, north Lincolnshire.

John Bridge, of Bridge McFarland Solicitors, said: "Many allegations have been made about my client over the last few days.

"The majority of those allegations are baseless and whilst there is a natural tendency to defend one’s self against such vile slurs, my client realises that ultimately she must save her account until it is given and tested in court."

Former Tory minister Neil Hamilton said that he and his wife had not learnt anything new from the press conference.

He said: "We are not prepared to let this hang over us knowing we can prove where we were at the time of the assault."

"It is physically impossible for us to have been anywhere near Ilford at the time of the assault."

Mr Hamilton also said he had hoped the woman involved would retract her allegations.

Mr Hamilton and his wife Christine, deny any involvement in the sexual assault.

Mr Hamilton said: "We took no parts in these events if they did occur…we are not prepared to be accused by this woman who then shelters under the cloak of anonymity."
