Death toll in Thailand floods rises to 105

The death toll in Thailand's floods has risen to 105, including 21 students at a single school.

The worst affected area was Nam Kor village in Phetchabun province where 90 of the deaths occurred.

Officials say villagers had ignored a warning that they were in the middle of a path carrying dangerous runoff from nearby hills.

Nam Kor's headman had urged residents to evacuate following the weather forecast, Apai Chantanajulaka, the director-general of the Local Administration Department, was quoted as saying.

"Villagers refused to listen to the warning because they had lived in the area for 100 years and were unconcerned," he said.

Nam Kor and two other villages were wiped out in the floods and mudslides.

Reports said that 21 students at a school in Nam Kor were among those killed and that many children remain missing.

Two bodies were recovered earlier in the village while rescue teams are continuing to search for 32 others who are still missing, Samran Boonrodrid, chief of Lomsak district, where Nam Kor is located, said.

The area is 185 miles north of Bangkok.

The floods, which began on Saturday, hit six northern and two northeastern provinces.
