US mayor charged over 60s race riot murder

A US mayor has been charged with murdering a black woman during race riots in the 1960s.

Charlie Robertson, Mayor of York, Pennsylvania, allegedly supplied the bullets used to shoot to death of 27-year-old Lillie Belle Allen in 1969.

Lillie Allen, a minister's daughter, was driving through a white neighbourhood when her car stalled.

Robertson, 67, a police officer in the city at the time of the riots allegedly incited a white street gang to violence, then provided gang members with ammunition used to kill Lillie.

He told the gang to, "kill as many niggers as you can," it is claimed.

Robertson has admitted that he yelled "white power" at a rally but denies all other charges.

He is one of six people who have been arrested for killing Lillie Allen.

He was addressed in court as "Mr Mayor".

Roberton surrendered to court a day after winning the Democratic nomination for a third term in office.

He was released on bail after the court appearance.
