Judge Ann Goddard has returned to work with a black eye - two days after being attacked in court by a murder suspect.

The 64-year-old judge looked pale and drawn but managed a smile as she entered Court 11 at the Old Bailey to begin the trial of another man accused of murder.

A new pair of glasses, a large white plaster on her left temple and a blackened left eye, were obvious legacies of the incident in the same court.

She was welcomed back by barrister Edward Rees QC, who said: "May I briefly and sincerely pass on behalf of the Bar, our regrets about recent events.

"We hope Your Ladyship is making a good recovery."

Judge Goddard thanked him, adding: "I have received many messages of support which have touched me greatly."
