Francois Hollande: Donald Trump makes me sick
âSome excesses make your stomach turn, even in the United States, especially when â as did Donald Trump â he speaks ill of a soldier, of the memory of a soldier,â Mr Hollande told members of the French Presidential Press Association.
Mr Hollande was referring to Mr Trumpâs recent comments about Captain Humayun Khan, a US soldier killed in Iraq in 2004. Capt Khanâs parents criticised Mr Trumpâs anti-Muslim rhetoric, only for Mr Trump to suggest the Khans were controlled by rival Hillary Clintonâs campaign and Ms Khan âwasnt allowedâ to speak.
Government spokesman Stephane Le Foll said Mr Hollandeâs comments were a response to Mr Trumpâs recent verbal attacks on France.
âIn this campaign, there are some extremely unusual types of comments,â Mr Le Foll told reporters following a cabinet meeting.
Last month, Mr Trump said France would be among countries he would subject to the âextreme vettingâ he is proposing for those seeking to enter the US, a move he says is necessary to deter attacks by people coming from countries âcompromised by terrorismâ.
France has been hit by a series of attacks by Islamic extremists since 2015.
Mr Le Foll also said US president Barack Obama was âwell qualifiedâ to make comments describing Mr Trump as âunfitâ and âwoefully unpreparedâ to serve in the White House.
In June, Mr Hollande said he would consider Mr Trumpâs election as dangerous and it would complicate relationships between Europe and the US.
Mr Hollande said he was hearing âhurtful, humiliating commentsâ during the campaign. Speaking about politicians in general, he said âthey should be respected when they are respectableâ.
âIf the Americans choose Trump, that will have consequences, because an American election is a world election,â said Mr Hollande.
âIt could lead to a very strong turn to the right in the world, or to a correction ... the American campaign shows issues that will be reflected in the French campaign.â
