French president Francois Hollande has criticised US presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying some of the things the Republican does makes him sick.
Francois Hollande: Donald Trump makes me sick

“Some excesses make your stomach turn, even in the United States, especially when — as did Donald Trump — he speaks ill of a soldier, of the memory of a soldier,” Mr Hollande told members of the French Presidential Press Association.

Mr Hollande was referring to Mr Trump’s recent comments about Captain Humayun Khan, a US soldier killed in Iraq in 2004. Capt Khan’s parents criticised Mr Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric, only for Mr Trump to suggest the Khans were controlled by rival Hillary Clinton’s campaign and Ms Khan “wasnt allowed” to speak.

Government spokesman Stephane Le Foll said Mr Hollande’s comments were a response to Mr Trump’s recent verbal attacks on France.

“In this campaign, there are some extremely unusual types of comments,” Mr Le Foll told reporters following a cabinet meeting.

Last month, Mr Trump said France would be among countries he would subject to the “extreme vetting” he is proposing for those seeking to enter the US, a move he says is necessary to deter attacks by people coming from countries “compromised by terrorism”.

France has been hit by a series of attacks by Islamic extremists since 2015.

Mr Le Foll also said US president Barack Obama was “well qualified” to make comments describing Mr Trump as “unfit” and “woefully unprepared” to serve in the White House.

In June, Mr Hollande said he would consider Mr Trump’s election as dangerous and it would complicate relationships between Europe and the US.

Mr Hollande said he was hearing “hurtful, humiliating comments” during the campaign. Speaking about politicians in general, he said “they should be respected when they are respectable”.

“If the Americans choose Trump, that will have consequences, because an American election is a world election,” said Mr Hollande.

“It could lead to a very strong turn to the right in the world, or to a correction ... the American campaign shows issues that will be reflected in the French campaign.”
