3D printing could bring space travel into a new era

Researchers at the European Space Agency are testing the next generation of 3D printers to use in space.

"The promise is enormous, You can make very complicated parts without one screw," says Director of technology at the ESA, Franco Ongaro, "...in terms of time, in terms of mass, in terms of ability to do things we can only dream of"

The international space station already has a 3D printer which can create plastic items but in the short term the ESA aims to develop the technology to produce engine parts for Rocket launchers or complex structures to install on planets and moons

Having to bring objects with them into space is costly on space and fuel but 3D printers will give them the ability to build them in space.the ESA hopes to eventually use planets and moons natural resources as building materials.
