Quirky World: Woman steals police car in which husband held
A woman suspected of stealing an Alaska State Troopers patrol car that held her handcuffed husband in the back seat was arrested on suspicion of theft and other charges.
Troopers acting on a tip found Amber Watford, 28, of Big Lake, and Joshua Watford, 38, at a home in Wasilla.
An officer had arrested Joshua Watford after receiving a tip that he was in a Big Lake pawn shop.
He had been convicted of driving under the influence but had failed to attend court-ordered classes, said troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters.
After Watford had been placed in the back of a patrol car, a passing motorist stopped and began speaking to the arresting officer. While the officer was distracted, troopers said, Amber Watford got behind the wheel of the patrol car and took off.
Troopers recovered the patrol car an hour later.
It had not been damaged. Nothing was missing from the car, including the handcuffs that had been on Joshua Watford’s wrists.
After the tip came in, the Watfords were arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft and other charges, including hindering prosecution and criminal mischief.

Just three people survived that fateful night by clinging to wreckage and among the dead was Lord Belhaven, the newly appointed Governor of Barbados. It is believed that those who died were buried, as was customary with drowned seamen at the time, in unconsecrated ground just west of Lizard Point at Pistil Meadow.
Three people are claiming ownership of the small brown chicken that fouled up rush-hour traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Oakland Tribune said the Oakland Animal Shelter has the chicken that strutted between cars at the Bay Bridge toll plaza. She was eventually captured by the California Highway Patrol.
Animal Services Director Rebecca Katz says people claiming ownership of the chicken, named Chip in a nod to the California Highway Patrol, or CHiP, need to come to the facility with proof, such as previous photos of the famous fowl. Two rescue groups are also interested in Chip.

The monarch’s model has been unveiled wearing a replica of a gown worn by the Queen in 2012 for her official Diamond Jubilee photographs. The Queen today passes the record set by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria who, Buckingham Palace has calculated, reigned for 23,226 days, 16 hours, and 23 minutes.
It was at the Taste of Hamburg-er Festival in the eastern Pennsylvania town of Hamburg.
The town named after the German city held its 12 annual festival featuring food, music, eating competitions and children’s activities. Some in attendance donned attire paying tribute to their favourite meat. There were more than 30 stands serving a variety of burgers.
Last year, the festival drew more than 35,000 people. Hamburg is a town of about 4,000 people in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
ENGLAND: A Spitfire pilot has been assessed by paramedics after making an emergency landing in a field.
Fire crews and paramedics were called to the site in Woodchurch, near Ashford, Kent, after receiving a report that the historic aircraft had come down.
The pilot had already managed to get out of the plane by the time the emergency services arrived at the scene.
A man who tried to sell a backpack of dirty socks as marijuana has been sentenced to at least one year in a Michigan prison.
Michael Suarez was sentenced for committing fraud through false pretences.
An unarmed robbery charge was dropped. Police say Suarez was pursuing a marijuana deal in July when he showed up at a home in Lenawee County’s Raisin Township. But instead of pot, he had a backpack stuffed with dirty socks.
Police say a purse with $2,800 was stolen from the home. Suarez and others were stopped after speeding through a stop sign. Defence attorney John Glaser says the “false pretences” were the dirty socks.
Suarez will be eligible for parole after a year in prison. His maximum sentence is seven and a half years.
