SWISS CHAIN SORRY FOR ‘UNFORGIVABLE’ PACKAGING

Quirky World ... Supermarket ‘sorry’ for Hitler coffee creamer

SWITZERLAND: A leading Swiss supermarket chain is apologising for what it calls an “unforgivable blunder” — distributing mini-containers of coffee cream bearing portraits of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

Migros, which also sells electronics and household goods, said it was immediately withdrawing boxes containing hundreds of the coffee cream containers and was breaking all ties with Karo-Versand, the small Swiss company that designed the collectible series of 55 different motifs — including likenesses of the German and Italian fascist dictators.

Migros described the incident as an internal failure and vowed to “tighten our controls for these products drastically” to ensure no more such mistakes took place.

PRINCETON PROF ACCUSED OF THEFT TO TUTOR STUDENTS

USA: The Princeton University professor accused of stealing 21 lawn signs belonging to a computer repair business will tutor students in exchange for the charges being dismissed.

John Mulvey must perform 120 hours of community service by teaching students in the Trenton area about finance and computer science, or prosecutors can reopen the case.

Owner Ted Horodynsky videotaped Mulvey driving off with the signs that he placed on clients’ lawns in July. Mulvey, a professor of operations research and financial engineering, said he was just picking up debris.

Mulvey’s attorney, Kim Otis, said her client was happy to do community service and have the charges dismissed.

USA: Some people paint the town. A western Pennsylvania man just painted a little stretch of Main Street, and now he’s in trouble for it. The Observer-Reporter says 55-year-old John Cherok II faces a preliminary hearing in Burgettstown where police have charged him with disorderly conduct and criminal mischief for painting the message “Slow, 25 MPH” on the pavement.

Cherok owns a book shop there and says too many cars speed on the road, some up to 50 mph. Police have found no speeding drivers.

WILDLIFE REHAB FOR BEAR FOUND IN OREGON DRUGSTORE

USA: A black bear cub found wandering the aisles of an Oregon pharmacy will be raised with the goal of releasing him into the wild.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said the bear has been taken to the PAWS Wildlife Centre in Lynnwood, Washington, for rehabilitation.

Director Jennifer Convy says rehabilitation staff care for bears with hands-off methods designed to mimic conditions in the wild, and they maintain an animal’s fear of people. Police scooped the cub into a shopping basket on Sunday at the Rite-Aid store in Ashland.

ARTWORK SWIPED

ENGLAND: Five large shark paintings worth £20,000, (€25,300) created by “the female Banksy”, have been stolen, police said.

The murals, painted by acclaimed street artist Bambi, were taken by thieves who broke into a building site in Upper Street, Islington, north London, earlier this month. The panels are painted black and feature white stencilled images of sharks and fluorescent pink flower shapes.

DOGS REUNITED

USA: A dog-loving Nebraska trucker has taken a lost seven-stone bull mastiff on a 1,380-mile trip back to her owners in Arizona.

Dani and Jason Windham were getting ready for their August 4 wedding in Nebraska when their three dogs knocked down a fence and ran off. Animal control officers found two of the pets, but not Koda. Seven days later, the Windhams moved to Arizona.

Last week, Koda was found after a farmer reported a dog chasing his cattle about 40 miles away from where she disappeared. The Windhams could not afford to fly her back, so a lost pets group in Nebraska put out a call for help. Truck driver Jimmy Dimmit answered and reunited Koda with her owners.
