100-YEAR-OLD GERMAN TURNS TABLES ON TRICKSTER

QUIRKY WORLD...Sharp pensioner turns the tables on trickster

Police in Berlin said they have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of attempted fraud after being tipped off by the quick-witted retiree.

The woman had smelled a rat when she received a call on Sunday from a woman claiming to represent a maintenance firm and offering to check her electrical appliances.

Instead of hanging up, the centenarian accepted the offer, then swiftly alerted the police.

Officers had little trouble arresting the man when he showed up minutes later. The suspect, a convicted swindler, had been released from prison just five days earlier.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA

USA: An alleged New York bail-jumper was arrested on his Pennsylvania college campus after he posed for a news photographer and police spotted his picture in the paper.

Authorities caught up to 25-year-old Jacob Close after he took part in the (Bloomsburg) Press Enterprise’s weekly ‘Your Opinion’ feature, answering a question about the controversy over the Washington Redskins’ name.

Police say Close jumped bail in a drug and drunken-driving case several years ago.

HOT PLOT

ENGLAND: The last burial plot in a cemetery is expected to sell for around £1,000 when it goes under the hammer later this month.

The plot, in Sutton Coldfield Cemetery in Birmingham, was originally bought by a mother for her son.

Auction House Coventry and Warwickshire is now selling the plot on behalf of the local man.

STAMP THIEF

ENGLAND: The son of a renowned stamp collector who died last year has admitted stealing his late father’s collection of rare stamps.

Joseph Jennings, 29, from Birmingham, was committed to Crown Court for sentence after magistrates heard how he sold stamps at a knock-down price to fund a gambling habit.

The son of journalist and stamp expert Peter Jennings, who died after a long-standing illness, was bailed and will be sentenced on August 5.

RED BULL SPILLAGE

USA: Thousands of gallons of Red Bull have spilled on to Interstate 95 in Florida after two tractor-trailers collided.

Florida Highway Patrol said a lorry carrying the drink was heading north when the driver tried to move to the centre lane because another lorry was stopped on the hard shoulder.

When he swerved back into the outside lane, the truck sideswiped the parked vehicle. The trailer ripped open and the energy drink spilled on to the road. The driver was given a ticket for failing to maintain a single lane after the incident and nobody was hurt.

CRETE CROCODILE

GREECE: Residents in Crete are blaming a six-foot crocodile for missing lambs and ducks — and souvenir shops have started selling inflatable versions of it.

Authorities on the Greek resort island say the animal was spotted last week in a man-made lake near the seaside town of Rethymno.

Regional official Vangelis Mamangakis said parts of the lake have been fenced off and efforts will be made to remove it. He said it was probably a pet that grew too big for its owner, who “thought it would be a good idea to dump it in the lake”.

VILLAGE VOTES

USA: In a tiny New York village, getting 26 votes could make you the mayor. Newsday reports two elections in Dering Harbour have hit a pair of 25-25 ties.

Resident Patrick Parcells got into the race after a spat with 11-term Mayor Timothy Hogue, over hedge trimming rules and starting a village website. Mr Hogue says the village is so small they can spread information more effectively through word of mouth.

The 98-year-old Shelter Island village is two square miles and has 11 full-time residents.
