New York to auction world’s most famous stamp

USA: The world’s most expensive stamp is expected to fetch between $10m to $20m when it goes on sale today.

The only surviving 1856 one cent magenta from British Guiana has rarely been seen since it was last publicly exhibited in 1986.

On each of the three occasions it has been sold at auction, the stamp has set a new world record and it is expected to set yet another high when it goes under the hammer in New York today.

It was made in 1856 in Guyana and bears the postmaster’s initials. Last bought in 1980 by convicted murderer and American multimillionaire, John du Pont, it has not been seen in public since going on display at a stamp exhibition in Chicago in 1986 until earlier this month.

Short had been out on supervised release for previous drug sales.

Race crasher

ENGLAND: Police are investigating a video which appears to show an ordinary car being driven onto a motorsport track during a race.

The driver, who has been named locally as 22 year-old Jack Cottle from Tonbridge, said the incident at the world famous Brands Hatch circuit in Kent on Saturday, had been blown “out of all proportion”.

The white Volkswagen car, carrying two passengers as well as the driver, is seen making its way along the track during a race as other cars pass by.

A female passenger asks near the beginning of the video: “Does anyone not think it’s weird that no-one’s said anything?”

Tattoo arrest

USA: A man with a realistic-looking tattoo of a gun on his stomach had the real thing tucked into his waistband when he was arrested, police in the US revealed.

Police in Maine told the Morning Sentinel that 41-year-old Michael Smith, of Norridgewock, showed up at a sheriff’s deputy’s home on Thursday night. Police say he was crying and had been drinking.

Authorities say Smith told police he had a fight with his ex-girlfriend and had stolen prescription narcotics from her. He was charged with stealing drugs, and the gun was confiscated. He was released on bail.
