Scott Halliday, 36, ran for Norfolk cancer charity Big C but did not realise he had cracked a bone until he went to hospital with a swollen foot the day after his mammoth effort.

Scott told the Norwich Evening News: “I have always wanted to do something that saves someone’s life, no matter what happens to my body.”

ENGLAND: The reigning champions of a world custard pie competition failed to hold on to their title when they were beaten by a team called The Grannies.

Pie ‘n’ Smash lost out to four men dressed as old-age pensioners, sporting zimmer frames and driving a mobility scooter, at the World Custard Pie Championships in the village of Coxheath, near Maidstone, Kent.

Brian Mortimer, one of the organisers, said 14 teams had taken part this year and 2,000 pies were thrown.

USA: The California cash rush has moved to the beach.

More than the usual kids with pails and men with metal detectors were digging through the sand in Hermosa Beach on Saturday as the anonymous man with the Twitter handle @HiddenCash moved his upscale scavenger hunt from San Francisco to Southern California.

City News Service reports that the anonymous benefactor buried 36 small plastic Angry Birds orbs in the sand.

The account then tweeted: “Hermosa Beach, between the pier and the volleyball nets to your left (as you face the ocean),” at about 11.30 am “Go!” Most were found by 5pm.

The same Twitter persona directed people to envelopes with $50 (€37) and $100 inside them in San Francisco this week. The cash-dropper says his giveaways are a “social experiment for good”.

USA: Authorities say that a 28-year-old man suspected of robbing a woman at a Washington ferry terminal friended her on Facebook the next day.

The Kitsap Sun reports that Riley Allen Mullins was charged on Friday in Kitsap District Court with second-degree robbery.

Authorities say a woman was sitting at the Bremerton ferry terminal on Tuesday using her headphones when she was struck on the head from behind. After she was struck, a man grabbed her iPod and purse and ran. She didn’t recognise the man but noticed a tattoo of a triangle on his neck.

The next day, the woman received a Facebook friend notification and recognised the sender as the man who robbed her. Investigators confirmed the Facebook account belonged to Mullins.

USA: A Chicago woman is grateful her family is safe after a deer leapt from a bridge, landing on their minivan as it travelled along a motorway.

Heidi Conner said the doe came to rest in the middle of the family’s Chevy. She and her four children were travelling at about 113kmh in the vehicle. She said the accident was bizarre, adding “nobody can believe this deer fell from the sky”.

Illinois State Police said witnesses reported seeing the deer jump from a bridge onto the vehicle below. Police said the animal died.
