Robbers in onesies show an appetite for danger

QUIRKY WORLD ... A daily look at some of the world’s stranger stories

ENGLAND: Detectives are hunting a gang of robbers dressed in onesies.

The raid happened at a McDonald’s restaurant in Glinton, Cambridgeshire.

Two men dressed in camouflage onesies — items of all-in-one leisure wear which have become popular with adults in recent years — and another in a navy gilet with a grey hooded top were caught on CCTV threatening staff and demanding money. They were all wearing balaclavas.

No one was injured.

Heroin happy meals

USA: An employee of a McDonald’s restaurant in Pittsburgh is charged with selling heroin in Happy Meals.

Officers say customers looking for heroin were told to go through the drive-thru and say “I’d like to order a toy.” The customer would then be told to drive to a window, where they’d hand over their money and get a Happy Meal box containing heroin in exchange.

Undercover agents on Wednesday set up a fake drug buy and arrested 26-year-old employee Shania Dennis of East Pittsburgh. Dennis denied wrongdoing as she was being led away in handcuffs.

FLYING SNAKES

USA: Never mind the cult movie Snakes on a Plane — scientists have shown how some serpents can fly.

Snakes were observed “slithering” through the air in an Asian rainforest.

Adopting an S-shape, they were able to glide almost 100ft from tall trees. “They look like they are swimming,” said study leader Dr Jake Socha, from Virginia Tech Wake Forest University in the US. “They turn their whole body into one aerodynamic surface.”

IRON RAIN

USA: A “weather map” for a distant world where it rains molten iron has been produced by scientists.

Using novel techniques to analyse its atmosphere, scientists found that Luhman 16B — technically a “failed star” — is surrounded by a searingly hot blanket of patchy clouds made up of droplets of liquid iron and other minerals.

The object is 6.5 light years away and the closest object of its type to the Sun. As it rotates, bright and dark clouds move in and out of view and alter its brightness. The clouds have a complex structure and temperatures exceeding 1,000C (1,832F).

TITANIC CLASH

VIRTUAL WORLD: The most expensive battle in the 10-year history of the online sci-fi video game EVE Online is over after 21 hours.

EVE developer CCP Games says the CFC and Russian forces won the encounter that ended up causing about $11tn worth of damage in EVE currency, which equals about $300,000 to $330,000 dollars (€221,420 to €243,560) in real-world money.

EVE simulates a universe of more than 7,500 stars and features more than 500,000 players piloting starships and engaging in a virtual economy linked to real-world money. CCP Games says the skirmish erupted after a coalition member missed a bill payment that would have ensured security.

POT STAND-OFF

USA: A group opposed to marijuana legalisation is concerned about this year’s Super Bowl between teams from the two states that have legalised pot.

Project SAM, for Smart Approaches to Marijuana, says it is running ads on billboards near MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, where the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos will play on Sunday.

The game has been hyped in some quarters as the “Stoner Bowl”, and legalisation advocates have paid for five nearby billboards, urging the NFL to allow players to use medical marijuana.

Project SAM has responded with ads that show a football player with the words, “motivation, perseverance, determination,” and then a marijuana leaf with the words, “None of the above”.
