A man from London has launched a campaign to find the stranger who saved his life six years ago.

One man's search for the stranger who stopped him committing suicide

On Jan 14 2008, Jonny Benjamin tried to take his own life because of his struggle with schizoaffective disorder.

He was about to jump into the River Thames from Waterloo Bridge when a man stopped to talk him down.

According to Mr Benjamin, the man said: "Please don't do this, I've been where you are and you can get better. Let's have coffee and talk about this."

With help from the stranger, Mr Benjamin changed his mind and climbed down from the railings, where he was helped by waiting police officers.

Mr Benjamin said: "His act of kindness changed my outlook on life and I have thought about him ever since.

"I want to find this man so I can thank him for what he did. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be here today."

Now a mental health campaigner, Mr Benjamin has launched a search for the man who helped him.

He said the man looked like he was in his early twenties and was on his way to work, but that he didn't remember his name due to being "extremely distressed" at the time.

The charity Rethink Mental Illness is backing the campaign.
