Liner adrift in Indian Ocean after fire

A cruise ship from the same fleet as the Costa Concordia, on which 32 people died after it ran aground off the coast of Italy last month, is adrift in the Indian Ocean with more than 1,000 people on board following a fire.

Fire crews on board managed to put out the blaze near generators in the engine room, and no one was injured on the Costa Allegra, Italy’s coast guard said yesterday.

The ship however issued a mayday call seeking assistance from any nearby cargo ships and there was a power blackout on board, the coast guard said.
