UN backs gay rights after landmark vote

THE top UN human rights body last night declared there should be no discrimination or violence against people based on their sexual orientation, in a vote that Islamic states firmly rejected.

UN backs gay rights after landmark vote

The move marks the first time the Human Rights Council has recognised the equal rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

It was adopted with 23 countries in favour, 19 against, three abstentions and one delegation absent. Libya’s membership in the 47-member Geneva forum was suspended in March.

“All over the world, people face human rights’ abuses and violations because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, including torture, rape, criminal sanctions, and killing,” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, adding that the “landmark resolution affirms that human rights are universal”.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Russia, Qatar and Bangladesh were among the nations that voted no.
